February 21, 2017 - The New Brunswick Free Public Library will ring in the Year of the Rooster with an afternoon of crafts and performances on Sunday, February 26, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. in the library's Carl T. Valenti Community Room. Sponsored by the Confucius Institution of Rutgers University, this festive program will feature Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, paper cutting, colorful folk dancing, and music performances provided by the students and teachers from the Edison Chinese School. Bring the whole family to learn about Chinese culture and celebrate the New Year with us. Delicious food will also be served.

Chinese New Year falls on January 28th in 2017, and is the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar with many traditions. Some of the typical practices are families gathering together for dinner, eating dishes that symbolize good fortune and health; children wear new clothes and receive red envelopes with money that will bring them good luck for the upcoming New Year; and everyone cleans up their clutter to "remove the old and welcome the new."

The Confucius Institute of Rutgers University (CIRU) was formed in partnership with Jilin University in China and with support from the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban)/Confucius Institute Headquarters. CIRU aims to broaden Chinese language instruction, promote Chinese culture, spur the development of Chinese Studies, and advance a wide range of cultural exchanges of the U.S. and China.
