The topical, irreverent, and experimental art associated with Parisian artistic cabarets of the 1880s and 1890s has long delighted the artist Alex Melamid, who recognized the serious fun of these earlier drawings, illustrated journals, and performances as a precursor to his own artistic projects and goals. This exhibition features a selection of works from the Zimmerli’s wide-ranging collection—including puppets, shadow theater props and posters, and satirical prints and drawings—along with new works by Melamid that celebrate his spirited creativity and salute the inventive and disruptive work of the late 19th-century Parisian avant-garde.
