Inspired by his eldest brother, a Navy veteran and bassist, Matthew also became a military musician and trombonist for 20 years of honorable and dedicated service. He has traveled the world as a military musical ambassador, played and performed for the King of Tonga, as well as 4 former US Presidents and other world leaders. After retiring, Echols worked as a teacher and freelance musician. He has performed with Tommy Igo & the Birdland Big Band, Eddie Palmieri & the Rutgers Jazz Ensemble, the Mingus Bigband, Jeff Tain Watts, Lee Greenwood, Radam Schwartz, Frank Kumba Lacey & Tromboniverse and Conrad Herwig.
