New Brunswick Police Implement Language Interpretation Program

Policia. Rendorseg. Polizei. Keisatsu. Four different words, all with the same meaning: police.

Through a newly launched partnership with Cyracom, a provider of instant, accurate interpretation and translation, the New Brunswick police are further bridging the language gap with the people they serve.

Every officer now has access to a live language interpreter via phone, 24 hours a day, with the capability of providing instant and accurate interpretation services in more than 200 different world languages and dialects.

The system facilitates instant communication capabilities, regardless of the written- or spoken-language limitations of a police officer.

“Strong and ongoing communication has always been a priceless tool for law enforcement and our residents,” Mayor Jim Cahill said. “This platform provides for instant interaction between the two; not only thinning the language barrier but allowing the city to remove that barrier completely.”

The service provides live, real-time video interpretation in hundreds of languages as well, conducted much like a modern telehealth appointment with a physician. Services are available on demand, or arrangements can be made in advance with an interpreter for pre-scheduled interpretation sessions.
