As part of the community’s ongoing efforts to improve safety and accessibility for drivers, cyclists, scooter operators and pedestrians, the New Brunswick Police Department will utilize resources from a recently awarded Street Smart Pedestrian Grant to further community education and enforcement efforts.
Awarded by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, the $35,000 grant will provide for stepped-up patrols at high-volume crosswalks and intersections; high-visibility signage throughout the city; and community education component through schools, houses of worship, and local agencies.
“For over a decade, the city’s Complete Streets Policy has guided the strategic planning to make New Brunswick safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists,” Mayor Jim Cahill said. “The city of New Brunswick is committed to policies that further opportunities to make the streets safer for users of all ages and all travel modalities.”
Through a combination of community education and enforcement, the New Brunswick Police Department aims to raise awareness of safe driving and pedestrian habits, as well as curb potentially dangerous behaviors on the road.
